Christmas Yard Decorations-Wire,Wicker&Wood

Christmas yard decorations come in a range of mediums that are all important in moderation. While blow molds cover the bulk of plastic decorations, now it’s time to cover metal/wicker and wood decorations. The metal/wicker decorations referred to here have most commonly been referred to as wire frame or wicker frame decorations. As these are unofficial terms, I cannot find definitive names to properly research and present the history. Likewise solid wood decorations have no definitive term as, historically, the vast majority of bigger decorations were made of wood. This means that their history is not distinct form Christmas celebrating in general.

Note that, in my blogs, there may be affiliate links to versions of the items I discuss. If you do purchase these products, I may get a commission to continue the work of inspiring people to light up the world.

Less frequently referred to as a subset of novelty lights, wire and wicker frame decorations are lined with mini lights. The lights are built into the frame by either being sealed in or clipped in. Sealed in ones have a cleaner look but cannot be repaired so once they don’t work, it’s all garbage. Clipped in ones will come with replacement mini lights that are as easy to fix as any light string. For many people, the inability to fix the lights would not affect the choice of which yard decoration to buy.

                Pros

Wire frame Christmas yard decorations come as deconstructed parts that generally require zip ties to hold them together. This can be a positive over blow molds and wooden decorations as they can be broken down for storage. Being solid, wire & wicker decorations often look just as good during the day as they do overnight. Unlike blow molds, they don’t fade in the sun or crack with blunt force (or at least not as easily). Their shell also is not as easily damaged and prone to mold as inflatables or wooden decorations.

                Cons

If they are dented or cracked, it will either be impossible to fix or significantly more expensive than their worth. Often the power cords are fragile enough that they will start to fray within the first two seasons, unless handled delicately. Ultimately, most issues will be insurmountable and so they’re often not a good investment unless they’re the most expensive ones. The more expensive they are, the longer they will last (being made stronger, having thicker & stronger cords, etc.). They can be damaged from disassembling each season and are still large when dismantled, which may be problematic for storing.

Wooden Christmas Yard Decorations

Like blow molds, many wooden decorations require a baseline level of artistry, handmade forms being commonly sold at local markets. Their ability to be ‘dressed up’ is highly variable and can often be customized by the purchaser with little effort. Most common additions are garland, bows, and light strings, which can usually be switched out for new ones if needed.

                Pros

Even if they are bought non-handmade, they still retain a quaint feel, tending to make the decorator seem more thoughtful. Their non-wooden parts are rarely difficult to replace if damaged. They are often relatively flat which makes them easier to store than the metal ones, but not always.

                Cons

Many of the cons for these decorations are the same as for the metal ones. Damages are common when placing in/out of storage as their bulky nature predisposes them to being ‘shoved’ into places. This damage is often unfixable or else the fixes are obvious and the decoration ends up not looking the same.

How Do You Secure Christmas Decorations On Your Lawn?

These two very general types of decorations can only be spoken of using broad generalizations but I will attempt to make sure you are prepared. Wire framed decorations generally have loops that are made to take spikes or pegs, see my video comparing the options. Ultimately you want to look for whatever will be able to resist the wind force that is placed on the decoration. To secure Christmas decorations on your lawn that are bigger, you’ll want to use the spiral spikes.
