   How Do I Organize My Holiday Storage?

Christmas storage ideas are forgotten until the end of the season as it’s not a part of the exciting season. However, you need to immediately start planning where to put any new decorations you’ve discovered for this season. The holiday display artist will find decorations of all types, shapes, and sizes that cannot possibly be stored neatly together. Learning to utilize new areas of your home is key to expanding your display over the years without creating stress. Three commonly underused areas are the garage (especially the ceiling and walls), under beds and furniture, and outdoors.

      Ceiling Storage Rack For Garage Storage Ideas

Many homes have high ceiling garages or storage rooms where the ceiling is not utilized. Using ceiling racks is often considered, falsely, to be too complicated or expensive to put storage areas up there. Ceiling racks are ideal for things you only get down once a year so this topic is meant for them. The ceiling rack I use is fully customizable and I put up it single handedly even with my disability. It can be adjusted from 6 feet to 8 feet long and 27 inches to 42 inches high. As well, the racks that fit into the system are individually removable so you can get into it from underneath. Are ceiling storage racks safe? If secured, ceiling storage will hold 600 pounds, which is more than any reasonable set of decorations placed up there.

While the storage racks described above are ideal, they are the most expensive version of this. In order to get cheaper versions, it will take a bit more work but is doable. You will need the exact dimensions of the area you want to put it in, length by width by depth. Designing from exact dimensions will limit the products available but that may not matter, especially if economics is a concern.

Properly choosing bins for inflatables, smaller decorations, etc. is key for a stress free end of the season. Arranging the display items in the storage rack is important to knowing what’s where and how to maximize the space. Basic principles to keep in mind for your choice of storage bins are: (1) they should be stackable, (2) smaller, rather than larger, (3) ideally collapsible.

         Stackable

Having them stack together is important to them staying safely up on the rack and not falling off over time. When they stack, they will fit in and use their own weight to stay in place. Stacking together also means that your storage won’t become a high stakes game of Jenga where removing one topples everything. Also, as long as they are stackable, the top bin will act as the best lid possible for the bottom bin.

         Smaller

It’s easy to assume being larger is important to making your trips up the ladder easier. Experience says though that the bigger they are, the more difficult and dangerous they are to get down. Pushing a large bin up a ladder and onto the rack is one thing but pulling it off is another. The weight you’ll balance the second it drops off the rack will eventually cause you to drop a bin someday. It only takes one broken decoration to decide simultaneously lugging lots of things up there at once is not good.

         Collapsible

While not being the most critical characteristic of a good bin, it is ideal and possible. If you’re able to collapse the bins, then you can stack them up out of the way. That way you don’t have to spend time climbing the ladder again, but will still have a tidy area.

There’s a limitless number of manufacturers making ‘track shelf’ systems, pick any store for a list of different manufacturers. They work by installing the tracks at the same angle and then installing brackets into the slots along the track. The brackets are then used to balance the shelves, which can be placed at any level, making them extremely customizable.

Once shelf placement is customized, then any irregular ornaments or decorations can be placed in their original package and shelved. The original package is always built specifically to keep the decoration safest. See the tips on bins  and other storage containers above.

There are several manufacturers who make systems that will use a pulley system to drop hooks from the ceiling. These systems can be used with plastic milk crates (or really anything less than 55 pounds, with a little imagination). This concept is useful for those who cannot climb ladders for whatever reason. As time goes on, you’ll develop a list of special tools you’ll need. Special scissors, repair tools for light strings, bags of hooks and zip ties that hang from hooks, etc. Garages have a large amount of wasted wall and ceiling space and maximizing that is key. Pegboard is the cheaper and faster option whereas slatwall is the more aesthetically pleasing and adaptable option. Pegboards are sheets that resemble a cheese grater with a series of holes across it into which hooks are placed. The hooks can then hold basic items in any configuration you want as they can be rearranged in any customization.

The downside is that pegboards cannot withstand the weight and environmental effects that slatwall can. As they are thin and made of lightweight material, they will tear if exposed to excessive moisture or heavy tools. Slatwall is more costly and takes more time to secure but can then hold much weightier items and resists moisture. Slatwall somewhat resembles vinyl siding and comes in more colors and types than pegboard, making it easy to look nice.

These are standard looking closet rods placed in hinges which allow them to be put up out of reach. They are helpful as you can use the attached handle to pull it down from 4 feet above the mounting. This means that if you mount it at shoulder height, the items will then be stored 4 feet above you.
They can be installed in any leftover spaces, ex. behind doors, above work areas, etc. While not being useful for most decorations, it certainly has a role to play. Wreaths can be tied on, once a year ugly Christmas sweaters can be hung, and lights can be wrapped around.

   Christmas Storage Ideas For Under Beds And Furniture

The garage is a powerhouse for storage but it should never be used for anything that melts, molds, or shatters. The temperature fluctuations that need to be expected in this area of your home means it is not completely dependable. Even the steps taken to protect your fragile items may not protect them from dropping or getting knocked into. So ultimately keeping it in where you live and are comfortable, while keeping it hidden under furniture is safest. Many beds have different empty space areas that allow for extra storage underneath. Examples are simple frames that have legs leaving space underneath and captain beds that have empty space in the middle. The under the bed option is identical to the under the couch, chair, or other furniture option. This space is so crucial to maximizing storage that there’s a vast array of options that fit any size space. This may be more ideal for any fragile decorations that you don’t want to risk falling off the ceiling racks.

   Outdoor Christmas Storage Ideas

It may be counterintuitive to store decorations outdoors with concerns of weather damage but decorations are made for the outside. Furthermore, there are several types of outdoor storage containers that are rugged enough to stay weatherproof in most situations. Several forms have handles that snap to keep the containers sealed, and have holes along the side to ziptie tighter. Like under the bed storage, outdoor containers also are diverse in size and shape so they can fit any area.

      How Do You Store Garland?

Christmas related garland can come in traditional looking fake or real branches and other greenery, or a beaded form. For beaded, a genius at GoodHousekeeping found that feeding garland into a plastic bottle will prevent binding up on itself. For greenery, hanging from ceiling racks or closet rods is your best bet as putting inside anything will cause damage.

      Q: What Is The Best Way To Store Christmas Lights? A: There is no best way but there are lots of good ways

Wrapping is a wide title for one option as there are an array things to wrap them around.
Cheapest
(1) A common suggestion is using a paper tube from around the house, which is the most economical wrapping form. On the negative, the paper tube option is neither easy or fast as you have to slowly wind the tube. If it’s done too fast then the string may slip off the end of the tube or crease it. Creasing is created by pulling the string so tight that it indents the tube, which weakens and eventually collapses it.
(2) A step up from tubes is using a sheet of cardboard to wrap it around, this is my preferred method. It may not be able to be stored in as many configurations as tubes but is less likely to frustrate.
Less cheap
(3)If you have space, and shorter light strings, a hanger is an option, possibly with the pull down closet rods. You want the hanger that has divots, made for straps, so that you can put one end locked into that. The plus side with this is that it’s sturdy and able to stand up to your practicing without breaking. Main negatives are, unlike the previous options, it costs money, and may not work for larger lights like globe lights. All-purpose light cord wind ups, pictured above are a flatter version of the hanger idea. They are more useful if laying in a bin, rather than hanging up as they are flatter than hangers.
Zero cost (of money)
(4) Wind the lights up free handed, twist tie them to prevent them from moving too much, and place them in a bin. Watch my video for some examples of this.
Pro tip, planning storage now will be key to preventing others in the house from being annoyed by your display. A seamless transition from display to storage will make everyone feel better about the huge setup. So start your garage storage ideas now!
